Choose Your Path Into NDT
One of the biggest misconceptions about NDT certification is that individuals simply choose a method, attend a class, and become certified. In reality, most technicians become qualified through their employer.
There are generally two paths into the NDT field.
Path 1: Get Hired by an Employer (Recommended)
This is the most common and most practical path into NDT. In this model:
- An employer hires you as a trainee
- The employer provides or coordinates formal NDT training
- You accumulate required experience hours on the job
- The employer administers qualification exams
- The employer ultimately certifies you
The biggest advantage is that you are gaining qualifications while getting paid.
However, this path can also be difficult because training new personnel requires a significant investment from employers. During the trainee phase, technicians cannot perform inspections independently and must work under the supervision of certified Level II or Level III personnel.
For this reason, opportunities are often more common in:
- High-volume manufacturing environments
- Large aerospace operations
- Companies with established in-house NDT programs
Inspection service companies and smaller operations may be less likely to hire trainees because of the extensive supervision and experience-hour requirements involved.
Path 2: Attend an NDT Training Facility
Another option is attending a dedicated NDT training facility and paying out of pocket for formal training.
While this path can help candidates gain foundational technical knowledge of NDT methods and standards and complete required classroom hours, formal training alone does not equal certification.
Hands-on experience hours comprise the most important qualification requirements in NDT, and completing classroom training does not guarantee employment or immediate advancement.
In many cases, focused NDT training programs are also more practical than lengthy college-based NDT programs, especially when the goal is obtaining required formal training hours efficiently.
